Infants, Toddlers, & Preschoolers (0-3)

AND THEIR PARENTS/CAREGIVERS

Perhaps you’re a first-time parent, overwhelmed and struggling with the transition into parenthood. Or you’re caring for a little one with big emotions. Maybe you find yourself feeling frustrated and confused as your toddler’s needs keep changing. If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone and support is available.

There is an African proverb which says, “It takes a village to raise a child”. This proverb speaks to the importance of community in raising children; not just for the child’s healthy development, but for their caregivers as well.

You aren’t supposed to do this alone. Struggling is not a sign that you are incapable; it is a sign that you need more support.

Parents/primary caregivers of children ages 0-3 can meet with our child and family therapist for support in the following areas:

  • Building a healthy relationship bond (i.e., secure attachment) with your infant/toddler

  • Learning how to attend and respond sensitively to your infant’s cues

  • Understanding your child’s personality, how it compares with yours as a parent, and how this impacts your parent-child interactions

  • Learning how and why to follow your child’s lead

  • Navigating expressions of intense emotion such as “temper tantrums”

  • Parenting guidance and support (e.g., strategies for reinforcing positive behaviour, problem solving, responding to challenging behaviour, etc.)

  • Exploring changes you may want to make as a parent, given concerns you might have about the way in which you were parented

  • Adjusting to parenthood, including stress and support, self-care, and psychoeducation around post-partum depression/anxiety

  • Identifying potential areas of concern regarding infant/toddler development for further assessment by qualified professionals
