Child & Family Therapy

FROM INFANCY TO AGE 12

Just as it is for adults, therapy is meant to be a safe space for children to process their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Therapy for children can take place on an individual basis with a therapist (for child and/or caregiver), and/or within the context of parent-child or family therapy sessions. Your therapist can help to determine with you which options might be best depending on the concerns as well as the age of your child.

There are many reasons why parents/caregivers might seek out child and family therapy services, including:

  • Emotional dysregulation (i.e., skill building to better regulate emotional responses)

  • Anxiety (e.g., generalized anxiety, separation anxiety, school anxiety, specific fears/phobias, selective mutism, OCD)

  • Depressed mood

  • Externalizing behaviour issues (e.g., aggression, acting out/ disruptive / oppositional type behaviours, etc.)

  • Loss and bereavement (e.g., the loss of a significant other through death or otherwise)

  • Parent-Child conflict and relationship issues

  • Sibling and other family relationship issues

  • Blended family issues (e.g., establishing healthy dynamics, roles, and boundaries)

  • Coping and adaptation to various significant life events (e.g., separation and divorce, blending families, adoption, grandparents raising grandchildren, the physical or mental illness of a significant family member, moves, etc.)

  • Parent counselling (e.g., parenting and co-parent guidance/coaching, support, psychoeducation, etc.)

  • Trauma (e.g., physical/sexual/emotional abuse, exposure to domestic violence, experiencing other traumatic events of many forms/various kinds, etc.)

  • Coping with stress (children experience various forms of stress just as adults do, including pandemic related stress)

  • School related issues and concerns (e.g., school avoidance and refusal, bullying, managing transitions, etc.)

  • Social skills and peer relationship issues (e.g., making and keeping friends, problem solving, etc.)

  • Self-esteem and body image issues

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD/ADD) (e.g., ADHD skills coaching, behavioural coaching, parent training)

Getting Started

We know that starting therapy can feel overwhelming and complicated. Let us uncomplicate things. Getting started is as simple as contacting our Client Care Team - we’ll take it from there.

In-Person & Online Sessions

Our team offers predominantly In-Person services for all sessions that involve children under the age of 12, and online or telephone services for parent-only sessions. (Should you require an online session for your child, this would be assessed on a case-by-case basis, depending on the age and particular needs of your child and family.)
