Education, Training, & Professional Development
I am in the process of completing a Master’s of Arts program in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. I have currently entered the practical portion of this two and a half year degree and I am ecstatic to apply the hands-on component of my training within New Roots Therapy. New Roots Therapy presents a supportive and diverse team, with a high level of expertise. Working within this multidisciplinary team allows me to implement strategic counselling techniques under expertly trained supervisors.
My prior education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Studies obtained from Royal Roads University, with a specialized focus on Social Work and Gender Studies. Additionally, I obtained a post-graduate Career and Work Counsellor Diploma at George Brown College to compliment my passion for the holistic nature of the human identity and the ever changing world of work. I continuously seek professional development opportunities and hope to focus more innately on trauma and PTSD as my work progresses.
I have been working within the counselling and coaching profession for just over 10 years. During this time, I have worked both within a community based and educational setting. I have served a wide variety of demographics, ages, and cultural identities. I am currently supporting students within a post-secondary setting and have recently focused on coaching and supporting individuals with Intellectual Disabilities. My front-line experience has allowed me to work alongside those who are experiencing anxiety and depression, stress, relational difficulties, behavior problems and low self-esteem. No matter what issues my clients face, I am committed to developing a realistic plan in an effort to reach therapeutic goals, practicing a supportive, non-judgmental approach.
Through my work experiences, I have gained exposure to therapeutic interventions such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, solution-focused therapy and mindfulness-based therapeutic techniques.
My Style & Approach to Therapy
Fundamentally, we are social beings balancing many, sometimes complex relationships. There are love relationships, partnerships, work relationships and friendships. In service of all these outside relationships, we often overlook our most important relationship— self-relationship. Our relationship with self is the fundamental platform from which we move forward. I believe that by connecting to self, we are able to heal unresolved issues and master the necessary skills to flourish.
I am a client focused counsellor who encourages a collaborative approach to goal setting. I believe that therapy should be conducted in a compassionate way that is respectful, supportive and generally kind to people. This approach supports the core aspects of the therapeutic relationship involving positive regard, genuineness and empathy. Assisting clients to recognize and develop self-compassion provides a healthy way to encourage well-being, while working toward issue resolution. I am open to an eclectic approach, focusing the needs of each individual client, while remaining focused and committed to a caring and supportive space.
I believe that the client is the expert on self and I may share a portion of your journey as a guide and support system. Together, we will work to find the balance between meeting you where you are at and encouraging you to grow. Although moving forward can be difficult and painful, I believe that there is true empowerment from choosing paths that lead to wellness, happiness and personal success.
I enjoy outdoor activities and love to play in all of the seasons! I love riding my dirt-bike and ATVs and don’t mind getting a little muddy! I have two small children, a husband and a sweet little kitty. We all enjoy spending time together exploring the countryside and city, watching movies and being silly. I do enjoy running and try to get out as much as possible no matter the weather. I take great pleasure in watching my children learn new skills and all about the world around them. I love cups of tea and British chocolate. I’m always up for a sporty activity and I love to laugh! Life is short, so it should be enjoyed as much as possible.
