Education, Training, & Professional Development
I recently completed my Master's of Arts degree in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University, which included an 8-month practicum placement at New Roots Therapy. I am excited to be staying on the New Roots Therapy team as a fully-trained counsellor! Prior to my studies at Yorkville, I also completed a B.Sc. in Counselling at Southwestern University. My educational experiences have allowed me to become familiar and comfortable with a variety of approaches to therapy, including: cognitive-behavioural therapy, solution-focused therapy, and family therapies. Some of the courses that are relevant to my development as a professional include: ethical standards, cultural competency in counselling, counselling skills, and marriage and family counselling.
I have approximately five years of experience in the social services field, which includes experience counselling individuals, couples, and group facilitation. My most recent experience was as Director of Family Services for a non-profit organization in which I co-ordinated counselling services and developed group programs to serve various needs of families in the community. I also have experience as a child and youth worker in which I worked alongside a team of therapists in a residential centre for teenagers with behavioural and/or emotional challenges.
My Style & Approach to Therapy
To me, the most important aspect of working with clients is providing an environment where openness and exploration is safe. As such, my approach is to treat each individual with respect, empathy, and understanding as we journey together. Guided by a client-centred approach, I truly believe that each individual has the ability to create desired change in their life and, upon understanding your goals, I will work with you to discover how we can collaboratively accomplish the changes you desire over the course of therapy. I value each individual as unique, with the belief that every situation is different from the next. As we work together towards meeting your goals for therapy, I hope to provide an atmosphere that is conducive to self-understanding, skill development, and growth.
I am passionate about fathering my three daughters, so most of my personal time includes parenting activities which take me to dance recitals, soccer games, and class trips! When not in structured activities, I love being outside with my kids, at the park, or enjoying the water during the warm weather. When I do get personal time, I enjoy reading, playing and watching sports, or enjoying a good movie.
